But conferences continued; five subcommittees were appointed on doctrine, polity, the ministry, administration, and law. The labours of the joint committee of the three Churches resulted in the virtual completion of the "Basis of Union" in , which, with some slight amendments, was later approved by the courts of the churches.
In the General Assembly, by a vote of to 90, resolved to unite with the Methodist and Congregational churches, and similar action was taken by the latter. Opposition to the action of the Assembly was being fostered by the Presbyterian Church Association, which had been formed and which was working vigorously throughout the church. Agreement was made in to cease propaganda on both sides, until after the close of the War. In the debate was resumed, and the Assembly of that year resolved "to consummate organic union" with the Congregational and Methodist churches "as expeditiously as possible".
Though in the Presbyterian church there was determined opposition to the proposed union, there was practically unanimous approval in the Methodist and Congregational churches. In the parliament of Canada passed the "enabling Act" "The United Church of Canada Act" by an overwhelming vote, and the necessary legislation in the various provinces was enacted shortly thereafter.

Internet Resources. The early decades of the 20th century saw rapid developments in ecumenical activity. In the s two more international bodies, Life and Work and Faith and Order, were born. These combined to form the World Council of Churches which was inaugurated in In Australia the Congregational, Methodist and Presbyterian Churches held a vote in the s to form a united church. The vote in the first two churches was clearly in favour but not so clear in the Presbyterian Church, so the union lapsed and it was another 30 years before moves for union were re-started.
The same three churches in Canada held a vote for union, also in the s, and this was successful.
The United Church of Canada was born. A sizeable minority of Presbyterians stayed out of the union, a similar story as happened in Australia in the s.
Uniting Church in Australia Assembly - Basis of Union
In the s the three denominations in Australia agreed to negotiate with a view to church union. A major difference of opinion soon appeared. A different opinion, which eventually prevailed, was to study the basics of the Christian faith in Scripture and the early church. This project resulted in a booklet of 46 pages, in small print, called The Faith of the Church.
Minutes for Mission
It was published in and has been reprinted several times. It sets out how church union is one aspect of the renewal of the church. The booklet was studied and discussed throughout Australia. Debate on this document focused mainly on two issues.
